In 1982, some American Indian elders in the Chicagoland area gathered together hoping to create a place of prayer for the American Indian community. The result of this gathering with the help of two Sinsinawa Dominican sisters was beginning of Anawim Center, a Native American spiritual center operating out of a small storefront in Chicago's Uptown neighborhood.
Anawim Center has served the American Indian community for 28 years with the combined efforts of Native elders and community volunteers.
In 2010, community members, staff, and leadership circle decided to refocus, reanimate, and reimagine a ministry for American Indian Catholics. Community members gathered wished to rename Anawim Center after the Roman Catholic Church's soon-to-be American Indian saint, Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha b. 1856-1860, whom a Mohawk woman lived in upstate New York.
In fall 2010, Kateri Center of Chicago was formed with a new mission and vision to serve a community of American Indian Catholics.
